4 easy tips to start selling your own Band Merch

Selling merch is not only a good way to create more income to fuel your local or global tour, it’s a great way for your fans to show they love you outside of seeing or listening to you.

Merch and bands go together like peanut butter and jelly! Everyone has owned a band shirt or lingered at the merch stand at an event, even for a chat. Before starting your own band merch, there are a few tips that can make your merch perfect. Here are the top 4 as mentioned by bands to make sure you can smoothly start creating and selling your merch like a lead act.

1.   The Fans “customers”

As much as merch is about you, it is about the fans who will use it to spread the word.

The first thing that you need to know is your target market. Try not to be too set on the same merch everyone else is making (can be hard to stay away from the classic band shirt!) and ask your fans what kind of merch they want and be creative

Create open conversations with your fans and ask yourself a few questions like these:

-       Who follows me? (ASL? Age, sex, location)

-       What are their other interests? - besides your band :)

-       What type of merch fits your band image?

Bonus points: Give your merch a stronger purpose and story to help your fans understand you on a better level. Make sure your merch is ethical, sustainable, recycled and adds to a mission such as a charity or a special cause to help a fan in need.

-      Create clear visuals (logo, images) to make your mission clear and easy to find.

2.   Marketing content

Now you have identified what your fans like, it’s time to focus on a winning design.

-          Design: There are many companies that help artists design, print, and ship merch. Just like what we are doing here in Good Band Merch. We are helping artists and bands in developing ethically produced merch for their fans.

3. Promotion

This is where you are going to finds ways on how to tell people about your merch.

-     Once you’ve designed and ordered your merch, it’s time to start thinking about creative ways to market it and sell it to fans. Some ways to market your merch include releasing limited-edition drops and giving discounts. Freebies are also a good way to promote your wider merch collection, patches, guitar picks, and stickers.

-     Offer discounts or bundle deals

-     How do your fans follow and communicate with you?

4.      Continue to level-up!

Merch doesn’t have to stop with your first t-shirt and hoodies collection only. It’s important to remember just how wide-ranging, inventive, and strategic your approach to merch can be.

Do not be afraid to think outside the box in creating your merch. Make them unique and impactful.
